UTTAPORN NIMMALAIKAEW

Uttaporn Nimmalaikaew (b. 1980) is one of Thailand’s most exciting and widely admired new-generation artists. By painting over layers of carefully draped thread and netting, he has developed a unique mixing of media that produces mesmerizing three-dimensional, ‘holographic’ artworks, often portraits of his own family members.

A devout Buddhist, Nimmalaikaew’s distinct style illustrates and explains the inevitable cycle of birth, aging, and death in all our lives, as explained in Buddhist philosophy.

One of the most sought after contemporary Thai artists of his generation, Nimmalaikaew’s works are included in private collections worldwide. In 2006, he was awarded the highly prestigious Sovereign Asian Art Prize. He has also been the recipient of numerous awards in Thailand, including the Purchase Prize in the 3rd Bangkok Triennale (2012), and the highly coveted 1st prize in the Thai National Exhibition of Art (2005, 2009).

His works have been exhibited at Musée du Quai Branly, Paris, France (2018); Silpakorn University Art Centre (2018, 2012); Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, Thailand (2013); National Gallery Thailand (2011), amongst others.

He currently lives and works in Bangkok, Thailand.
